Kale, Portuguese Tronchuda
Kale is an all-around great annual leafy green to have in your garden. With so many varieties, there is sure to be one you and your family will like. They are quick to grow, easy to maintain, and have a cut-and-come-again growth habit (our favorite). This allows it to provide for your family over a long growing period.
Tronchuda Beira, also known as Portuguese cabbage or kale, comes from Portugal and is commonly used to make Portuguese kale soup. The thick texture, mild flavor, and oval leaf characteristics are like collards. Leaves will be a beautiful deep blue-green color with white veins. This is a vigorously growing kale that will produce over a long growing season filled with bountiful harvests.

Plant spacing: 18-36” apart
Sun, soil, and water requirement: This kale variety prefers sun but can get tipburn in hot weather. It grows well in fertile, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Consistent watering will produce bigger plants and harvests.
Harvesting: You can begin to harvest your kale two months after transplanting it into your garden. Kale leaves can be cut one by one, as needed. Start by harvesting the outermost leaves. As you harvest, it’ll continue to grow and provide for your family over a long growing period.
Culinary: This kale is commonly used in soups, but it also works well in smoothies, juicing, sautéing, added to stir-fries, or tossed in stews. You can peel the stems and use them as you would celery.
Nutrients: Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense veggies you can have in your garden. Packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, vitamin C, and much more.
Special considerations: Once plants begin to bloom, the leaves will become tough and bitter.
Companion planting: Plant near aromatic herbs, cabbage family, marigolds, nasturtiums, beets, celery, cucumbers, dill, garlic, hyssop, lettuce, mint, onions, potatoes, rosemary, sage, spinach, and Swiss chard. Keep away from pole beans, strawberries, peppers, tomatoes, and peas.
