Lettuce, Jericho (Romaine)

$3.00

Romaine lettuces have long, slightly bitter leaves, sturdy, sweet, hearts (centers), and provide a hearty crunch to any meal.

This romaine lettuce has beautiful, crisp, light-green leaves, is heat tolerant, and tip-burn resistant. This is a great variety to grow to its mature size. Its excellent, sweet flavor makes it perfect for salads or wraps and will retain its sweetness throughout the season. You can harvest the outer leaves throughout its growth cycle or wait until the entire head forms.

Days to Maturity: 55-60 days full head

Plant size: 24” tall

Plant spacing: 8-12” apart

Sun, soil, and water requirement: Lettuce likes full sun, but will appreciate partial shade during warmer months, and prefers to be in well-draining soil, high in organic matter. Lettuce needs a constant and abundant supply of water during the growing period. Inconsistent watering can affect head formation.

Harvesting: Harvest what you need and come back when you need more. Harvest your entire lettuce head before it begins to bolt (produce flowers). Once bolting begins, the lettuce leaves will start to turn yellow and become bitter.

Culinary: This is a great fresh choice to have in any garden. Perfect for salad lovers.

Nutrients: Lettuce is low in sodium, and very low in saturated fat and cholesterol. It is also a good source of iron potassium, fiber, Vitamin A, C, K, and B6.

Companion planting: Plant near beets, carrots, parsnips, radishes, strawberries, onions, asparagus, corn, chives, garlic, cucumbers, eggplant, peas, spinach, tomatoes, sunflowers, and coriander. Keep away from the cabbage family, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower. Lettuce tenderizes summer radishes, and planting near chives/garlic will help to repel aphids.
