Swiss chard is a favorite leafy green to grow and can be grown year-round in Hawaii because it can handle the warmer and cooler temperatures. Some people like to grow multiple smaller plants and harvest younger leaves, while others like to grow a single plant and let it reach maturity. When given the proper space, swiss chard can get big, and typically one plant is enough to feed your family. Chard is very easy to grow, rarely bothered by pests or diseases making it a great fit for gardens in Hawaii.

This gorgeous, magenta sunset variety has a reddish-purple stalk that is tender and narrow with medium-dark green leaves.

Days to Maturity: 53-60 days

Plant size: 8-24” tall depending on how you space them

Plant spacing: 12” apart for mature plants, 4-8” apart for baby leaf harvest
