Lettuce, Tom Thumb

Butterhead lettuces produce small, loose-leaf heads that are remarkably smooth in flavor.

This unique heirloom tom thumb butterhead lettuce produces mini baseball size heads, perfect for individual salads. Heat and bolt resistant, this lettuce can form medium-tight central heads even in hot weather. Its flavor is mild and creamy and gives you dark green outer leaves wrapped around a bright yellowish-lime green interior. You can cut individual leaves or pick the entire head. Very tasty!

Days to Maturity: 35-50 days

Plant size: 4-6" tall and wide

Plant spacing: 6-10” apart

Sun, soil, and water requirement: Lettuce likes full sun, but will appreciate partial shade during warmer months, and prefers to be in well-draining soil, high in organic matter. It will need a constant and abundant supply of water during the growing period. Inconsistent watering can affect head formation. Plant 6-8 inches apart so the plants will just touch when mature.

Harvesting: You can harvest your lettuce by removing the outer leaves while the center leaves continue to grow. You can also cut the whole plant at once for a beautiful lettuce head harvest.

Culinary: This is a great fresh choice to have in any garden. Perfect for salad lovers.

Nutrients: Lettuce is low in sodium, and very low in saturated fat and cholesterol. It is also a good source of iron potassium, fiber, Vitamin A, C, K, and B6.

Companion planting: Plant near beets, carrots, parsnips, radishes, strawberries, onions, asparagus, corn, chives, garlic, cucumbers, eggplant, peas, spinach, tomatoes, sunflowers, and coriander. Keep away from the cabbage family, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower. Lettuce tenderizes summer radishes, and planting near chives/garlic will help to repel aphids.
