Lettuce, Red Velvet
Leafy lettuces do not form a compact head. The leaves branch from a single stalk making this lettuce more perishable than other varieties. Tender leafy lettuces are often used as baby leaf lettuces in spring mixes. The red leaf has a burgundy tint and mild flavor, like the green leaf, while the oak leaf is spicier and nuttier. To avoid instant wilting, wait to add salad dressing until just before serving.
This red velvet leafy lettuce has the most stunning appearance out of all the lettuce varieties we carry. The tops of leaves are solid maroon, and the backs are slightly green colored with maroon. The leaves are such a dramatic deep red that you barely see any green at all, it’s quite beautiful. We love growing this lettuce along with our other favorite canasta lettuce. Its slow to bolt, soft, and the loose-leaf frilled leaves give it so much character. Another great cut-and-come-again option to add to your leafy green collection.

Plant spacing: 8-10” apart
Sun, soil, and water requirement: Lettuce likes full sun, but will appreciate partial shade during warmer months, and prefers to be in well-draining soil, high in organic matter. Lettuce needs a constant and abundant supply of water during the growing period. Inconsistent watering can affect head formation.
Harvesting: Harvest what you need and come back when you need more. Harvest your entire lettuce head before it begins to bolt (produce flowers). Once bolting begins, the lettuce leaves will start to turn yellow and become bitter.
Culinary: This is a great fresh choice to have in any garden. Perfect for salad lovers.
Nutrients: Lettuce is low in sodium, and very low in saturated fat and cholesterol. It is also a good source of iron potassium, fiber, Vitamin A, C, K, and B6.
Companion planting: Plant near beets, carrots, parsnips, radishes, strawberries, onions, asparagus, corn, chives, garlic, cucumbers, eggplant, peas, spinach, tomatoes, sunflowers, and coriander. Keep away from the cabbage family, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower. Lettuce tenderizes summer radishes, and planting near chives/garlic will help to repel aphids.
