Cucumber, Sooyow Nishiki

$3.00

Cucumbers are a gardener and keiki favorite for their versatility, vigorous growing habits, textured skin, and delicious taste. Cucumbers are commonly pickled, eaten raw on salads, can be used in soups and so much more! Asian cucumbers are normally longer than their western cousins and more popular to grow in our tropical Hawaiian regions.

Sooyow Nishiki cucumbers are easy to grow and love the sun. These heat tolerant plants produce unique cucumbers that have ridges and white spines in their dark green skin. Fruits are sweet and crisp and don’t need to be peeled. Just slice them up and toss them into your fresh garden salad!

Days to Maturity: 50-60 days

Plant size: 6-8 ft. tall and will need a trellis or space to sprawl

Plant spacing: 12” apart with a trellis, and 36-60” apart without a trellis

Sun, soil, and water requirement: Cucumbers like full sun and a fluffy, rich, loamy soil. They require frequent watering with good drainage for a productive growth cycle. Inconsistent watering can lead to fruit shriveling on the vine before they reach maturity.

Pruning: Cut off dead leaves as they appear.

Harvesting: Once fruit bearing begins, pick daily. If they are left on the vine after they are mature, production will slow down.

Culinary: Enjoy these cucumbers sliced with a light dressing or in salads. Also popularly used for pickling, fresh juices, soup, salsas and stir fries.

Nutrients: Cucumbers are packed with nutrients like vitamin K and vitamins B and C, along with minerals like copper, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium.

Special considerations: Train to climb vertical support like hog or chicken wire for better air circulation, straighter fruits, and easier harvesting.

Companion planting: Plant near beans, beets, cabbage, corn, celery, dill, oregano, lettuce, radishes, sunflowers, peppers, tomatoes, peas, okra, broccoli, cauliflower, marigolds, and nasturtiums. Keep away from potatoes, aromatic herbs (mint), and melons. Radishes will help deter cucumber beetles.
