Although eggplants can be grown as perennials in tropical climates, it's usually easier to grow them as an annual. Such a fun, easy, plant to grow. One plant will easily feed a family of four for a period long enough to eventually get tired of eating eggplants. Not a bad problem to have!

This Italian black beauty variety is a gardener’s favorite for its deep purple skin and large fruits. Enjoy the lovely lavender blossoms before your fruit starts to set. A perfect plant to harvest as-you-need.

Days to Maturity: 60-75 days

Plant size: 24”-36” tall

Plant spacing: 30”-36” apart

Sun, soil, and water requirement: Loves full sun, warm, fertile, well-draining soil that is high in organic matter and needs consistent deep watering- especially in hot climates.

Harvesting:  If you are not sure if your eggplant is ready to be picked, it's better to harvest young rather than when they are overly mature with dull skin and a bitter taste. Clip fruit stem with shears – be careful of the spikes on the fruit stems. Frequent harvesting will encourage more production and the largest fruit.

Culinary: Italian eggplants are delicate and sweeter than their larger cousins and their plump, round size makes them ideal for stuffing, roasting, and broiling. They also make a delicious meat substitute.

Nutrients: Eggplants are high in fiber and low in calories. How nice!

Companion planting: Plant near beans, peppers, basil, lettuce, peas, spinach, okra, sunflowers, thyme, oregano, dill, catnip, radish, potato, and tomato.
