Batavia lettuces resemble common lettuce but the leaves are more crinkled, wavier and more heat tolerant. There are bright green and red-brown varieties, and the leaves are typically sweet and crisp.

This striking, red-tinged, Batavia Cherokee variety is highly heat-tolerant; perfect to grow all year round in Hawaii. This variety produces large, upright, marvelous deep red, heavy heads and will deliver a crunchy, nutty flavor that is among the best. Cherokee lettuce will thrive even under difficult conditions and provide you with a long harvest period. This is a great choice for families or for anyone who wants lettuce they can grow year-round.

Days to Maturity: 48 days

Plant size: 6” tall, and 10-12” wide

Plant spacing: 10-16” apart

Sun, soil, and water requirement: Finally, lettuce that can handle our sun! Lettuce likes well-draining soil, high in organic matter. Lettuce needs a constant and abundant supply of water during the growing period. Inconsistent watering can affect head formation.

Harvesting: Harvest your lettuce head before it begins to bolt (produce flowers). Once bolting begins, the lettuce leaves will start to turn yellow and become bitter.

Culinary: This is a great fresh choice to have in any garden. Perfect for salad lovers.

Nutrients: Lettuce is low in sodium, and very low in saturated fat and cholesterol. It is also a good source of iron potassium, fiber, Vitamin A, C, K, and B6.

Companion planting: Plant near beets, carrots, parsnips, radishes, strawberries, onions, asparagus, corn, chives, garlic, cucumbers, eggplant, peas, spinach, tomatoes, sunflowers, and coriander. Keep away from the cabbage family, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower. Lettuce tenderizes summer radishes, and planting near chives/garlic will help to repel aphids.
