If you’re looking for a simple yet uniquely rewarding flower, you’ve come to the right spot!

The cleome spider flower is known for its tall, thin, long-limbed appearance, large, detailed, attractive flowers, and distinctive, fern-like leaves. The petals of the flowers come from a central point, creating a softball-size cluster. These delightful flowers may be a solid color or bi-colored ranging from lavender to pink.

Plants will bloom once well established in your garden. They are drought and rain-tolerant and can stand our hottest summer months, making them a perfect choice for Hawaii home gardens. These will also help attract beneficial insects and pollinators – who doesn’t love that!

Days to Maturity: 60 days

Plant size: 2-5’ tall

Plant spacing: 12-18” apart

Sun, soil, and water requirement: Spider flowers prefer sunny locations but can tolerate some shade. They can also handle most soil types if they are well-draining. Younger plants will need more water, but once established, mature plants are drought tolerant. Rainwater is typically enough. Mulching the growing area during the summer will help retain soil moisture.

Pruning: Deadhead flowers for continuous blooming throughout the season.

Special considerations: Be mindful – spider flowers produce an abundant supply of seeds and will reseed if left unattended. Your spider flowers will surely come back year after year. Seed pods may be removed before dropping to the ground and can be spread to another location in your yard or zone.

Companion planting: Compatible with most plants.
