Have you ever considered growing sesame seeds? It may not be common, but it’s worth it! Sesame is a nutritious indeterminate tropical herb that is drought tolerant and will continue to bloom and set seed pods over a long period. Their flowers may be pink or white and they produce tan, red, black, and white seeds. Seeds are commonly toasted, roasted, pressed for oil, or ground into a paste known as tahini.

Days to Maturity: 85-90 days

Plant size: 24-36” tall and wide

Plant spacing: 24-36” apart

Sun, soil, and water requirement: Plant sesame under full sun in well-draining soil using little to no fertilizer. Give your plants space to grow. Once plants are established, they can handle hot weather with little water.

Harvesting: Once flowers are pollinated, pods will begin to form. When the lower, mature pods start to dry, the plant is ready to be harvested. Cut the plant at the base of the stalk, close to the soil line. Hang the stalk upside down to dry in a cool and dry place. Place a bucket under the stalk to catch the seeds. As the stalk dries, the seeds will begin to fall from the pods. Give the stalk a good shake and watch as the tiny seeds fall effortlessly. Once you’ve collected the seeds, sift, or lightly blow on the seeds to remove any excess debris before storing or cooking.

Culinary: Add these delicious sesame seeds to noodle dishes, stir-fries, rice mixtures, baked goods, and much more.

Nutrients: Sesame seeds are great for your immune system, supplying vitamins and minerals like zinc, copper, iron, fiber, and vitamin B6.

Special considerations: Growing sesame can inhibit the growth of root-knot nematodes in soils.

Companion planting: Plant sesame near bell peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, okra, beans, sweet potato, tomatillo, corn, and other sun-loving varieties.
