This colorful orcas lettuce is a green and red spotted semi-head variety, locally grown on the Island of Moloka'i. It produces heavily wrinkled leaves that are short and wide and will add a delicious crunch to your salads and sandwiches. This variety is fun to grow and has been adapted for growing in Hawaii.

Days to Maturity: 50-60 days

Plant size: 9” across

Plant spacing: 8-12” apart

Sun, soil, and water requirement: Lettuce likes full sun, but will appreciate partial shade during warmer months, and prefers to be in well-draining soil, high in organic matter. Lettuce needs a constant and abundant supply of water during the growing period. Inconsistent watering can affect head formation.

Harvesting: You can harvest your lettuce by removing the outer leaves while the center leaves continue to grow. You can also cut the whole plant at once for a beautiful lettuce head harvest.

Culinary: This is a great fresh choice to have in any garden. Perfect for salad lovers.

Nutrients: Lettuce is low in sodium, and very low in saturated fat and cholesterol. It is also a good source of iron potassium, fiber, Vitamin A, C, K, and B6.

Companion planting: Plant near beets, carrots, parsnips, radishes, strawberries, onions, asparagus, corn, chives, garlic, cucumbers, eggplant, peas, spinach, tomatoes, sunflowers, and coriander. Keep away from the cabbage family, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower. Lettuce tenderizes summer radishes, and planting near chives/garlic will help to repel aphids.
