Okra is a heat-loving, nutritious packed annual in the hibiscus family that produces gorgeous hibiscus-like flowers, and can grow 3-6 ft. tall. The blooms are big, bold, and beautiful and are sure to attract beneficial insects to your zone.

This is the most popular okra on the market. Its vigorous growth and high-yielding habits make it a perfect plant for large families. If you have space, this could be the perfect okra for you! We have successfully grown this variety in containers as well, it will just keep your plant and harvests smaller, yet still very productive.

Days to Maturity: 55-60 days

Plant size: 5-6 ft. tall

Plant spacing: 18-24” apart

Sun, soil, and water requirement: Give your new okra plant, lots of fun under the sun! Improve native soil by adding in lots of compost and other rich organic matter. Okra can tolerate high heat and is mildly drought tolerant but try to ensure it gets 1 inch of water each week, including rainfall.

Harvesting: Harvest okra pods when they are 2-4 inches long.

Culinary: Okra is best known for its use in gumbo or as a fried vegetable. In Asia, okra is often pickled or used in stir-fries. It can also be boiled or prepared fresh.

Nutrients: Okra is low in saturated fat, sodium, and cholesterol. It also provides a source of protein, potassium, zinc, copper, fiber, and a ton of vitamins. A great superfood to add to your eating habits.

Transplanting: Okra has fragile taproots, so be careful not to disturb the roots when transplanting. Best to water your new plants thoroughly before transplanting them into your garden.

Companion planting: Plant your new okra plants near your melons, cucumber, sweet peppers, eggplant, and basil. Its size will also provide your lettuce with some protection from the heat of the sun.
