This popular perennial herb is very easy to grow, drought-tolerant, and makes a great companion plant because of its repelling aroma. Chives are great to have in at least one spot in your garden – we prefer planting it close to our lettuces. This standard chive variety has a mild onion flavor with heavy leaf production. It also has larger and thicker leaves that freeze or dry better than other varieties. It grows in clumps from underground bulbs and will produce round, hollow leaves that are much finer than an onion. We love adding it to tacos, salads, and eggs!

Days to Maturity: 75-85 days

Plant size: 10-12" tall

Plant spacing: 4-6” apart

Sun, soil, and water requirement: Chives prefer full sun to partial shade in rich, well-draining soil. Keep the soil moist but not soaked by watering consistently, especially during dry spells.

Harvesting: Individual leaves can be harvested once your plant has become established and can be harvested up until the flowering cycle begins. Cut the leaves close to the base of the pant. The more often you harvest the leaves and flowers, the more they will grow. You can use the leaves fresh or dry them.

Culinary: Chives are a delicious addition to stir-fries and soups and is very common in Asian cuisine. The flowers are edible and can be used as a garnish on salads, dips, sauces, soups, stir fries, and pizza. Yum!

Nutrients: Although used in a smaller portion, chives share similar benefits to garlic and chives, providing vitamins, and other medicinal.

Special considerations: Like bunching onions, mature plants can be dug up, divided, and placed in different areas in your garden to be harvested for years to come!

Companion planting: Plant your chives near berries, carrots, roses, tomatoes, parsley, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, mustard, peppers, potatoes, rhubarb, squash, strawberries, beets, and kohlrabi. Keep away from asparagus, beans, peas, and spinach. Garlic chives will improve the flavor and growth of companions while deterring aphids and Japanese beetles.
